The best office chair for guitarists: important criteria

17/11/2025 | SIHOOOffice

Many guitarists ask for "the best office chair ," but the truth is:

There is no perfect universal chair.

Specialized musician chairs like MiShu, VIVO Adjustrite or Wilde & Spieth are built for professionals – and you can tell by the price and the function.

However, if you are looking for an office chair that is suitable for both working and playing guitar, without having to spend €700–1,200 on a musician's chair, then the Sihoo M59AS is, in my opinion, the most sensible and well-thought-out choice in the normal office chair segment.

Not as the "only solution", but as the best price-performance option for hobby guitarists, home office players or musicians who do not want to invest in specialized studio furniture.

What an office chair for guitarists really needs to be able to do

This isn't about generic ergonomics. It's about realistic guitarist problems that you can only understand if you play yourself.

1. Arm clearance for guitars with a body width of 9–12 cm

  • Acoustic guitars usually have a body width of between 9.5 and 10.5 cm.
  • Classical guitars approx. 9–10 cm
  • Electric guitars are narrower, but need lateral freedom of movement.

What this means for chairs:

Armrests must go – or at least be completely foldable.

2. Stability during impact

Fingerstyle or strumming creates small pushing forces. If the chair rolls too easily, you'll slowly slide backward.

3. Seat width for guitarist posture

The guitar lies diagonally in front of the body.

A seat that is too narrow or too contoured blocks thigh contact.

4. Upright, active sitting posture

Many cheap office chairs are too soft or tilted backwards – bad for gaming.

5. Fine height adjustment

So that the guitar and forearm remain at a natural angle.

A guitarist sits on an ergonomic office chair and plays an acoustic guitar in a music room, with music stands and instruments in the background.

Why the Sihoo M59AS impresses in everyday life

I don't recommend the M59AS because it's perfect – but because it offers the best combination of guitarist functionality and everyday office use among normal office chairs.

1. Armrests guitarists really need

The armrests can be folded completely backwards.

This creates a lateral space that acoustic and classical guitarists otherwise only have with specialized musician chairs.

This perfectly fulfills guitarists' number one requirement.

2. Seat surface: wide, flat, without side edges

The seat measures approximately 50 cm in width – more than many standard chairs.

For guitarists, this means:

  • Diagonal position without lateral pressure
  • The acoustic guitar body (10 cm) lies stable.
  • No "rocking" at the edge of the seat

This is actually one of the underestimated reasons why many guitarists hate normal office chairs.

3. Good stability thanks to the 5-point base and clean mechanics

Especially when rhythmic strumming, you move slightly to the side.

The synchronous mechanism of the M59AS yields in a controlled manner, without rocking or tilting.

Not as dynamic as a musician's chair (MiShu for example), but perfectly adequate for guitarists working from home.

4. Ergonomically active, not "couch-soft"

The backrest is not excessively soft.

This forces a more alert, active attitude — exactly what you need when playing.

Quick guide to better posture while gaming

  • Bring the guitar to you, not the other way around → relieves neck strain
  • Fold armrests completely away → shoulders remain low
  • Adjust the seat height so that the forearm points slightly downwards.
  • For acoustic/fingerstyle: slightly elevate the right leg (footstool)
  • Back straight, pelvis slightly tilted forwards

Who the Sihoo M59AS is suitable for – and who it isn't.

Perfect for:

  • Home office guitarists
  • People who combine work and play
  • Amateur guitarists with acoustic, classical or electric guitar
  • Players who need arm freedom and a wide seat
  • Users who do not want to buy a musician's chair for €700–1,200

Not ideal for:

  • Professionals who practice classical music for 3-5 hours daily
  • Guitarists who need maximum dynamic sitting movement
  • Studios that expect a complete musician's equipment

My personal opinion:

The Sihoo M59AS is not the “best chair for guitarists”, but it is the best office chair for guitarists who want a reliable, affordable and practical setup.

It provides approximately 80% of the functionality of a musician's chair – at a fraction of the price.

And that's precisely why I can recommend it with a clear conscience.
